O’Malley-Keyes – Fine Art

Julia O'Malley-Keyes creates an oil painting on canvas in her Cape Cod Art GalleryJulia O’Malley-Keyes landed on Cape Cod in 1969. She was a “Wash Ashore”, as they call people who were not born on “The Cape”. She opened her first Cape Cod art gallery at the age of 22 in Provincetown MA, which she owned for 10 years. In her spare time, she was also a studio model and eventually studied with Henry Hensche, an internationally recognized impressionist painter, and color theorist.

After time spent on travel, study and showing her paintings in numerous fine art galleries, Ms. O’Malley-Keyes returned to the Cape settled in Falmouth. In 1996 she opened her second art gallery, the award winning Day Hill Fine Art Gallery. In 2012, she made the decision to close her gallery and devote all of her time to painting, artistic study, and traveling.

Best known for her highly detailed paintings of classic sailing yachts and regattas, Ms. O’Malley-Keyes is also deeply attached to figurative painting, in particular dance, and also enjoys painting the stunning landscape around her home on Cape Cod.

Julia O’Malley-Keyes is known for her dedication to charities. That history continues with her newest art gallery through the donation of 10% of her business net income to various charities. On a yearly basis she also donates original oil paintings for auctions in support of numerous national and local areas of need including The Mystic Seaport Museum, JDF, Figawi Charities, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, Cape Cod Hospital Foundation, A Baby Center and many more. “Life is all about balance, you get from it, what you give”

Nantucket Painting"Life these days can be so confusing. My choice of painting in the genre of contemporary realism, using an old masters technique of transparent layers of paint, reflects my desire to simplify what an individual is looking at and through my work, feel that they are in the moment and part of the painting ".  It is color, her intense emotional connection to the sea and her fascination with elegant sailing yachts that inspire her. "I have chosen to paint these magnificent sailing yachts as a historical record and for the indescribable joy that I find in painting these elegant queens of the sea".

"Many of the most beautiful sailing yachts ever built have been found in the mud and resurrected by dedicated individuals, most notably Elizabeth Meyer who was instrumental in the restoration of Shamrock V, an elegant J-Class yacht, and more than 80 other classic yachts. These committed individuals have spent millions of dollars, to resurrect and bring back to life, the most beautiful sailing yachts in history, built during the early years of the 20th century."

Julia will occasionally create paintings of the charming harbors on Cape Cod, where she lives and paints. She finds them to be a warm welcome and indicative of where she lives, but her real artistic heart lies in Classic Marine paintings of the historical J-Class and big boat class antique sailing yachts.  She travels yearly to study with noted Marine painters, to further hone her skills and find continued inspiration in painting the historical yachts that are at the center of her artistic career.
