The Living Classrooms Foundation

Investing in young lives

Living Classrooms Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to working with the community to improve DC's and Baltimore's waterfront neighborhoods and to preventing delinquency and gang involvement through award winning programs. Begun in 1985 in Baltimore with 100 students, it has grown to serve over 50,000 students each year.

The Foundation's floating classrooms incldue the pungy schooner Lady Maryland, the Chesapeake bugboat Mildred Belle, and the skipjack Sigsbee. Shipboard programs serve a diverse population of students and range in length from one day expeditions, to week long land and sea programs. Leadership and cooperative learning are key objectives. Learning stations include water quality, plankton studies, marine life, oyster health and stability, navigation and helmsmanship. The shipboard programs emphasize applied learning in math, science, language, arts, and history.

The vessels are also available for charter for private events. For more information, contact Jennifer Riley at 410-685-0295 x509 or visit them on the web at www.livingclassrooms.org
