Sailors for the Sea

The object is to band sailors together in an effort to raise awareness of the need to protect the environment we hold so dear.  Started by a number of prominent sailing enthusiasts, among them David Rockefeller, Jr., Sailors for the Sea is an organization with clear objectives:

  • Recruit thousands of members across the United States
  • Educate the membership about ocean health
  • Identify and broadcast local, regional and national opportunities for protecting the integrity of marine life in U.S. waters
  • Engage the membership in specific, concrete actions they can take to promote clean water and plentiful fish stocks
The sea is a sanctuary for all of us who sail. But recently two comprehensive studies — by the 2003 Pew Oceans Commission and the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy — made it dramatically apparent that our oceans are severely threatened. The three main threats are serious pollutants that degrade coastal ecosystems, a dramatic decline of fish stocks, and bureaucratic chaos in ocean management.  Unfortunately, prior intervention attempts failed to include public education, which has proven to be a necessary component. See also Pew Trusts.

Surfers, divers, and recreational fisherman are already active as advocates for the sea and sea life, but the sailor’s voice has been missing. Sailors for the Sea proposes to be that voice.

We invite all sailors to join in a national effort to understand, restore, and help protect the bountiful life and pristine beauty of the sea. Take the plunge. Join Sailors for the Sea and make a difference.
