Soundkeeper

The mission statement for Long Island Sound's Soundkeeper organization is very focused:

"Soundkeeper is dedicated to the protection and enhancement of the biological, physical, and chemical integrity of Long Island Sound and its watershed. Laws established by the Clean Water Act, as well as others, were designed to protect the Sound, and other waters, from pollution. But citizens are responsible for seeing that these laws are enforced. Soundkeeper is the vital link — the voice and action of concerned citizens — in making the waters of Long Island Sound fishable and swimmable. By raising awareness and attacking critical issues with the commitment and support of a dedicated citizen network, Soundkeeper is the advocate for the Sound. Our daily work is patrolling, investigating, intervening, and raising public awareness of the Sound’s problems."

Toward the goal of education, Soundkeeper publishers a number of useful boolets including The Clean Boaters Guide, available through their website. They also fight the dumping of raw sewage into the Sound, monitor mercury levels in fish, and support an oyter hatchery to ensure a healthy supply of these natural water purifiers. Basic membership is $35.

Soundkeeper also sponsors a human powered race on the Sound. The Sixth Annual Soundkeeper Lighthouse to Lighthouse Race will be held held at Westport, CT’s Compo Beach on Saturday, September 17, 2005. This fourteen mile race is open to all seaworthy human powered vessels. Racers are asked to make a $45 donation. Over 150 people are expected to enter the race this year. Last years participants included an eclectic mix of small craft including fixed and sliding seat rowers, solo and tandem kayaks and Outrigger Canoes.
