Sailing Foundation of New York

Helping our young sailors reach out around the world

World class competition

New York Yacht Club Commodore George "Dooie" Isdale had a vision for a foundation that would support a wide range of maritime related activities. He recognized that many promising groups and individuals lacked the resources they needed for success. In 2000, with a group of sailors who shared his vision, Commodore Isdale established the Sailing Foundation of New York. Donations since inception exceed $2,000,000 and the foundation has made distributions to more than seventy eligible recipients.

The Sailing Foundation of New York is an organization dedicated to growing and supporting competitive sailing, marine related activities and sailing education. The Foundation provides guidance and direct financial support to athletes and to qualified organizations that share their goals. All of the Foundation’s administrative and operating expenses are bourne by the Founder and President. All contributions to the foundation are allocated 100% to support eligible athletes and organizations.

Supporting Olympic Athletes

Currently there are more than 30 athletes in the SFNY Olympic funding program. Recent grant recipients include Star Class sailors Andy Horton and Brad Nichol and Laser Radial Class competitor Danielle Brennan-Myrdal.

Supporting Marine Related Education

Global outreach and education
SFNY continues to support the Reach the World Foundation, a sailing yacht traveling around the world sending educational content to, and interacting with, severely under resourced schools in New York City. In 2007 SFNY will support the Youth Safety-at-Sea Program sponsored by the Storm Trysail Club. This program includes classroom sessions and on-the-water practice of various safety at sea practices. The coaches are all volunteers. The Foundation provides funding for administrative expenses.
